Dunes Lodge, a famed tourist lodge in Tana River County in Kenya, has been closed following bloody clashes between Orma and Pokomo communities.
Managing director Tamsin Corcoran said the lodge, which was recently listed as “One of 50 Great Green Places to Stay Worldwide,” by the London Times been closed because of the volatile situation in the area.
“We have closed the lodge until the situation calms down. We work closely with the local community,” Ms Corcoran said adding that two of the hotel workers had been killed in the clashes while at their homes.
The clashes that have left more than 100 people dead have also affected the operations of the 150,000-acre conservancy – a joint venture between Delta Dunes and the Tana River Delta community.
It is widely believed the flare up in the Tana Delta was caused by competition for natural resources, although local politics may have flared up the clashes.
