On the other hand, Mgahinga is located in the extreme southwest of Uganda in kisoro district. Its among the three parks that are located on the Virunga ranges that separate or join the three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.Mgahinga has very few mountain gorilla families compared to Bwindi Impenetrable national park. This has put it on a disadvantage when it comes to gorilla trekking.
Bwindi Impenetrable national park has over eleven habituated gorilla families unlike Mgahinga that has only one habituated gorilla family which is Nyakagezi. But in Bwindi there is diversity, you can choose to trek in the north (Buhoma) and families there are the; Mubare which is the oldest family in Bwindi, Habinyanja and Rushegura. Still in Bwindi you can choose to trek gorillas in the east commonly known as the Ruhija side and visit the Kyaguriro, Oruzongo or Bitukura families. And if you choose the southern part, you are more assured of seeing the Nkuringo, Nshongi, Kahungye and Bweza families.
According to research, Bwindi Impenetrable National park is the only place where mountain gorillas live with the chimpanzees in the whole world. Bwindi is also rich in terms of birds and twenty five of them are endemic species which makes it better than Mgahinga national park if one is a birder. In Uganda, mgahinga national park is the only park where mountain gorillas co- exist with golden monkeys giving you an awesome experience trekking the mountain gorillas in conjunction with the golden monkeys.
Both Bwindi and Mgahinga national park can be accessed y both air and road, putting them on the same advantage in terms of transport. However still Bwindi being on a better advantage than Mgahinga because it can be accessed through two air strips; Kahihi and Kisoro air strip unlike Mgahinga that can only be accessed through Kisoro airstrip.
Bwindi Impenetrable national forest has several accommodation options in all sides of the forest. There are the budget, up market and mid range lodges for you to decide accordingly, however in Mgahinga the only up market lodge is the Gahinga lodge, other options are found in kisoro town.
Adding more advantage on the Bwindi Impenetrable national park, it is nearer to other national parks like Queen Elizabeth national park which is a two hours drive from Bwindi. You can have join experiences connecting from one game park to another looking for the climbing lions in Ishasha or a boat cruise on kazinga channel with the highest concentration of hippos in the whole world. You can further proceed to Kibale national park also known as the place with the best habituated chimpanzees in the whole world. With that comparison, you can now choose wisely a place to trek the mountain gorillas, whether Bwindi impenetrable national park or Mgahinga national park to get the best experience.
